Shaping a sustainable future. Strengthening the European and German economies. Worldwide.In the past year, the German and European economies continued to face significant global challenges. Persistent geo-economic uncertainties as a result of conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, increasing fragmentation of world trade and geopolitical disruptions in global supply chains put a strain on investments and foreign trade. At the same time, accelerated climate change, the pressure of transformation towards greater sustainability and resilience, and technological change significantly increased the demands on companies and their business models. In this challenging environment, KfW IPEX-Bank provided targeted support to German and European companies with financing for sustainable, innovative and future-oriented projects. It helped to drive technological innovation, ensure competitiveness and tap into new markets. This development is impressively reflected in new commitments amounting to EUR 24.2 billion.
Our transformation projects
Particularly strong demand in the past financial year was for financing for energy transition projects, digital infrastructure as well as from the raw materials sector and innovative technologies. With these commitments, KfW IPEX-Bank made an important contribution to overcoming long-term global challenges and strengthening the European and German economies.
Strengthening renewable energies
In order to advance the energy transition, KfW IPEX-Bank is contributing around EUR 110 million to syndicated financing for wind energy expansion in Germany. The total volume amounts to approximately EUR 1.8 billion. Through repowering, the output of more than half of the 37 existing wind farms is set to quadruple by 2028, increasing the installed capacity to 3 GW.
Making logistics resilient
KfW IPEX-Bank is supporting Duisburger Hafen AG ("duisport") with investments in port and logistics infrastructure with financing totalling EUR 45 million. The funds will be used, among other purposes, to modernise storage areas and transshipment facilities in Europe’s largest inland port, which serves as a central hub for trimodal freight transport.
Supporting the mobility transition
KfW IPEX-Bank is providing a bilateral loan of close to EUR 300 million for the public transport network in the Rhine-Ruhr region, for financing 36 modern FLIRT XL electric suburban multiple units, which will be in operation on the Rhine-Ruhr transport network from 2029 and will contribute to the mobility transition.
Diversifying raw materials supply
As part of its international project financing, KfW IPEX-Bank is contributing USD 150 million to the expansion of the Minera Centinela copper mine in Chile. The overall financing has a volume of around USD 2.5 billion and facilitates a significant expansion of the copper production, which is a strategically relevant natural resource, essential for electrification and electromobility.
