Smart Cities

Our path to a digital future

Video: The "Smart Cities Pilot Projects" competition (KfW Group/Nutcracker).

The German Federal Government and KfW want to support municipalities and districts on their way to a digital future. Together with the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community (BMI) KfW is providing grants totalling 750 million euros, distributed over four competition rounds.

Last year, 13 projects were selected in the first round among 100 applying municipalities from the whole of Germany. The pilot communities now invest in sustainable urban development. The competition is meant to provide an incentive for municipalities to understand digital transformation as a task of their own and to foster projects with a participatory approach in close dialogue with the citizens.

All United Nations member states adopted the 2030 Agenda in 2015. At its heart is a list of 17 goals for sustainable development, known as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our world should become a place where people are able to live in peace with each other in ways that are ecologically compatible, socially just, and economically effective.
