Whether it be drinking water, rivers, lakes, wetlands or oceans, water is a resource, a habitat, an energy source – and is essential for our survival. Therefore, everything must be done to protect it. With our 2023 topic of the year, we are showcasing the many facets of water and what KfW is doing to protect it, both in Germany and internationally.

Water: a vulnerable habitat and precious resource

With this year’s focus on water, we are turning our attention to a resource that is often taken for granted from Germany’s perspective. In Germany, water is generally available, safe and clean. But if we take a closer look, the effort required to maintain this is enormous. Anthropogenic climate change and pollution also threaten the availability of water and can lead to serious damage.

“Water plays a key role in climate action”

Extreme weather events are increasing with climate change. Heavy rain leads to flooding, and prolonged dry spells lead to regional water stress. A new German Federal Government action programme and a corresponding KfW promotional programme are aimed at natural climate change mitiga-tion. Water plays an essential role in this. KfW experts Gudrun Gumb and Luise Thomas answer our questions on this topic.

Water for the Global South: precious water in arid regions

Making a lot out of a little – this is often the practice of water projects in the Global South. For example, this means making the most out of the scarce water for people and nature. However, financial resources must also be used as efficiently as possible, because there is also never enough fund-ing.
