International migration in a long-term perspective
International migration attracts a great deal of attention, even if only a relatively small portion of the world's population lives outside their home country. The main determinants of long-term patterns of international migration are the structural transformations which national economies experience in the course of their development. These include demographic transition, industrialisation and growing prosperity, which accompany the long-term transition from initially increasing and subsequently decreasing emigration.
