KfW energy efficiency programme product family remains very successful
The success of KfW’s energy efficiency programmes continued in 2017. Energy efficiency measures within the corporate sector are promoted by offering considerable repayment bonuses from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) and attractive interest rate conditions.
The programmes have been very well received on the market. Commitments in 2017 totalled more than EUR 5.7 billion, of which almost EUR 3.5 billion was earmarked for the KfW Energy Efficiency Programme – Energy-efficient Construction and Refurbishment, and EUR 2 billion for the KfW Energy Efficiency Programme – Production Facilities and Processes.

A lending volume of some EUR 3.5 billion was committed under the KfW Energy Efficiency Programme – Energy-efficient Construction and Refurbishment in 2017.

KfW waste heat energy efficiency programme
The KfW waste heat energy efficiency programme supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) has established itself on the market.
The programme launched on 1 May 2016 is aimed at businesses and promotes investment in the modernisation, expansion or new construction of systems to prevent or utilise waste heat. The programme features interest rate reductions using KfW funds and attractive repayment bonuses from BMWi funds, and is involved in the BMWi's “Germany makes it efficient” campaign. A pure grant option has been offered as part of the programme since 1 September 2017, aimed at companies that do not require long-term financing. Grants worth EUR 10 million have already been committed as part of this option alone.
Accounting for around two-thirds of total final industrial energy consumption, process heat is the most energy-intensive field of application in the industrial sector by far. As a result, preventing or utilising waste heat plays a key role in reaching climate protection targets.

KfW Renewable Energy Programme – Standard
KfW offers low-interest loans to support the expansion of renewable energy to generate electricity and measures to feed it into the power grid. It has made a significant contribution in recent years to increasing the share of gross electricity generated from renewable sources to over 33% (AG Energiebilanzen, as of 21 December 2017). Onshore wind once again accounted for by far the largest share of the commitment volume in 2017.
KfW Renewable Energy Programme – Storage
Small photovoltaic battery storage systems have been promoted since 2013 under the KfW Renewable Energy Programme – Storage, which includes BMWi's attractive repayment bonuses and KfW's low-interest loans.
- Total commitments (since 2013): EUR 493 million
- Total number of storage systems financed (since 2013): 30,508
The programme term is limited until 31 December 2018. Thanks to the KfW Renewable Energy Programme – Storage, Germany has been witnessing sustainable development in photovoltaic storage systems in recent years.
KfW Environmental Protection Programme
The KfW Environmental Protection Programme is used to promote general environmental and climate protection measures taken by commercial enterprises by providing low-interest loans. The KfW Environmental Protection Programme makes a key contribution to reducing carbon emissions.
In 2017, around EUR 190 million was committed in the areas of resource efficiency, air pollution control, noise control, waste, wastewater and environmentally-friendly transport.
BMUB Environmental Innovation Programme
This programme supports innovative large-scale pilot projects that are using cutting-edge technological processes and process combinations for the first time in a quest to reduce stress on the environment. The interest rate and investment subsidy of EUR 47 million (2016: EUR 21 million) is being made available by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU).
