Burglars love the dark: How KfW promotion can secure your home
Burglary figures tend to rise again, especially during the darker months of the year. To mark Burglary Prevention Day on 25 October 2026, KfW and the police service are raising awareness of the importance of preventing burglaries, and highlighting available funding opportunities.
Burglaries often occur where security measures are lacking or inadequate. Front doors, windows and patio doors are especially vulnerable. However, police experience shows that even simple measures can significantly reduce the risk of burglary.
Anyone considering such measures can receive a promotional loan from KfW under the ‘Age-appropriate Conversion’ programme. Up to EUR 50,000 per housing unit is available at favourable terms. The promotion is aimed, among others, at tenants and owners – regardless of age. Loans can be used to finance the retrofitting of doors and windows, for example. Alarm devices and other security technology are also eligible for funding. The prerequisite is that the security measures are installed by a specialist contractor and meet the minimum technical requirements.
Interested parties should first contact a police advice centre for guidance on burglary prevention, and use this advice to plan their project. They should then make an appointment with a bank of their choice. This bank will apply for the loan from KfW. As soon as approval has been granted, the measures can be implemented and a specialist contractor commissioned to carry out the installation. Once the work has been completed, applicants must submit proof of proper installation to their bank.
