• KfW increases contribution to the Energy Support Fund by EUR 250 million

The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) is providing a grant of another EUR 250 million for short-term repairs and spare parts for Ukrainian energy infrastructure via KfW. Some of the funds will go to establishing a Ukrainian “emergency reserve of critical goods” such as transformers and machinery for high-voltage lines. The aim is to ensure that the population is supplied with energy and heating in good time before winter despite ongoing Russian attacks.

The funds will go to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund (UESF). Since it was founded in 2022, this fund has been grouping together financial contributions from governments, the EU and private donors.

Since 2022, the BMWE and the Federal Foreign Office have already paid in around EUR 560 million in grants to the energy support fund via KfW.

The new increase of EUR 250 million brings the total German contribution to around EUR 810 million. Germany remains by far the largest donor to the fund, which has so far raised over EUR 2.4 billion.

An external procurement agency is conducting transparent and competitive tenders for the goods to be procured on behalf of the donor community as well as monitoring the use of the funds. KfW is actively supporting the participation of German suppliers on behalf of the BMWE.
