KfW boosts investments in energy infrastructure with new credit instruments
- The Energy Supply Investment Loan and KfW Energy Supply Syndicated Loan launch on 3 August 2026
- The programmes – part of the Germany Fund – open up new financing opportunities for energy supply firms and their project companies
- KfW Chief Executive Officer Stefan Wintels: Germany Fund gathers momentum
On 3 August 2026, two further components of the Germany Fund are being launched with the Energy Supply Investment Loan and the KfW Energy Supply Syndicated Loan. These credit instruments are aimed at energy supply companies and the banks financing them, and are intended to support investments in energy infrastructure. KfW has developed the programmes on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and the Federal Ministry of Finance.
The expansion of energy infrastructure is a vital investment task of the coming years. Many regional energy providers are facing high financial needs, but are then limited by credit constraints regarding bank financing and by their own balance sheets. The aim of the new promotional programmes is to expand financing opportunities for projects in the grid-connected heating or cooling supply and for the expansion of electricity distribution in Germany. The new loan instruments are designed to help advance Germany’s path to climate neutrality by 2045. Measures that are eligible include, for example, the modernisation of electricity distribution networks and the construction of geothermal plants, heat and cold storage facilities, and heat transfer stations. Municipal and commercial energy supply firms and their project companies are eligible to apply.
Stefan Wintels, Chief Executive Officer of KfW:
"The new loan programmes under the umbrella of the Germany Fund will significantly increase the range of debt financing available to energy supply companies. This makes sense, as significant investment in the billions will be required in our energy infrastructure in the coming years. This is possible because the German Federal Government through guarantees and KfW through its own balance sheet take part of the credit risks off our financing partners and thus relieve the burden on their balance sheets. The timely launch of these two programmes shows that the Germany Fund is now gathering momentum."
KfW offers the Energy Supply Investment Loan via financing partners. On-lending banks are granted a 50 percent exemption from credit risks. The loan is aimed at projects with a loan volume of up to EUR 100 million per project. Financing covers up to 100 percent of the eligible costs. Depending on requirements, terms of up to 25 years and a grace period of five years are possible. Energy supply companies interested in the programme submit their application to the financing partner of their choice before the project starts.
As an alternative to the investment loan, KfW offers the KfW Energy Supply Syndicated Loan. This loan is suitable for larger infrastructure projects where financing partners need additional relief due to credit volumes or caps. At the invitation of a financing partner, KfW participates with up to 50 percent and a maximum of EUR 100 million in customised syndicated financing under standard market conditions. On request, KfW also refinances other financing partners participating in the syndicate, with up to EUR 200 million per project.
