Press Release from 2026-06-18 / Group
KfW expands its promotional programme for electricity and heat generation from renewable energies
- Starts on 18 June 2026
- Promotional loans of up to EUR 150 million per project for companies of all sizes
- Promotion for projects not covered by the Renewable Energies Act
KfW is strengthening the market-based expansion of renewable energies with a new promotional offer. The “Renewable Energies Plus” programme now supplements the existing product family in this area. Through this programme, KfW finances corporate investments in systems that generate electricity, heat and cooling from renewable energy sources, as well as investments in energy storage systems. Both the acquisition of new systems and the modernisation of existing ones are eligible for the promotion. A maximum loan amount of up to EUR 150 million is available per project. Companies of all sizes can apply for the promotional loan through a financing partner of their choice from 18 June 2026.
In particular, the programme aims to support the marketing of electricity through so-called direct supply contracts. In this case, the sale of the generated electricity is not backed by state subsidies such as the feed-in remuneration under the German Renewable Energies Act (EEG), but exclusively through agreements between electricity producers and other market participants. Overall, market-based expansion is still in the development phase, and financing partners are confronted with more complexity than in the regulated market segment. “Renewable Energies Plus” addresses the resulting barriers and introduces reliable planning security.
Melanie Kehr, member of the Executive Board responsible for domestic promotion at KfW, stated:
"With attractive terms of financing, especially for projects with electricity marketing via direct supply contracts, the new 'Renewable Energies Plus’ promotional programme sends an important signal to the market and strengthens access to green electricity for industry and SMEs. We also set clear incentives for entering into new, sustainable solutions for electricity and heat as well as modernising existing systems. In this way, we are making the energy transition financially viable for companies and at the same time strengthening the competitiveness of Germany as a centre for business."
The promotion is not tied to a minimum loan amount and can be requested in a lump sum or in tranches. Global loans to promotional institutions of the federal states or combinations with other promotional funds are also possible. This does not apply to systems that already benefit from promotion under the EEG, federal support for efficient heating networks, the Combined Heat and Power Act or comparable state subsidies. Eligible projects can be located within the EU, in the UK or in Norway.
