Today marks the start of the application phase for the new KfW Award Urban Living, which boasts a total prize money of EUR 45,000.

Climate change, digitalisation and demographic change present huge challenges also for our towns and cities. The cities of tomorrow need innovative concepts and bold solutions. And quite a lot has already been achieved in Germany. To put the spotlight on sustainable and pioneering projects in towns, cities and communities, KfW Group has created a new award, the KfW Award Urban Living.

Until 15 March 2022, municipalities of any size, as well as municipal enterprises, can enter projects that have contributed to a better quality of living. Integration, innovation, affordability and sustainability are just a few of the assessment criteria.

The aim is to provide impetus for the cities of tomorrow and motivate others to follow suit. The projects should be able to demonstrate visible results and be geared towards the common good.

Projects receive awards in the categories of “Energy-efficient Urban Rehabilitation”, “Digital Education” and “Social and Affordable Living”.

  • The category of “Energy-efficient Urban Rehabilitation” will reward municipal projects that have shaped individual sectors of urban life – or even entire neighbourhoods – to be as climate-friendly as possible.
  • In the category of “Social and Affordable Living”, KfW is on the lookout for municipal housing projects that aim to balance the market and provide affordable housing or projects that fulfil a social function.
  • The “Digital Education” category will honour municipal projects that have successfully implemented digitalised education and vocational training.

Three prizes will be awarded in every category, one to a small town, one to a large town/small city and one to a major city. Each winning project is awarded a prize of EUR 5,000; the winning municipalities will name a municipal enterprise or organisation that is to receive the prize money.

The winners will be selected by a jury made up of experts from KfW Group, the media, politics and business. The awards will be presented at a ceremony in Berlin in late June. KfW’s media partners will announce the winning municipalities, and KfW itself on its website and social media channels.

The KfW Award Urban Living is the latest addition to KfW’s awards family. KfW has already been paying tribute to innovative start-ups and exceptional building projects with its KfW Entrepreneurs’ Award and KfW Construction Award for a number of years.
