KfW to participate in the financing of the Trianel Borkum II offshore windpark

  • KfW: Sixth financing project from the offshore wind energy programme
  • Additional participation of KfW IPEX-Bank in the commercial part of the financing as part of an international banking consortium
  • Green energy from the sea: The wind farm produces carbon-neutral energy for around 210,000 households

KfW is providing over EUR 300 million worth of financing for the Trianel Windpark Borkum II offshore wind farm (TWB II) which represents a significant contribution towards this project. It is already the sixth provision of financing from the offshore wind energy programme published on behalf of the Federal Government which is used to finance system installations at sea for power generation.

Dr Ingrid Hengster, Member of the Executive Board, notes "with what is to be our sixth financing commitment, we are making a further contribution to establishing offshore wind energy as an important component of electricity generated from renewable energies in Germany. Moreover, the fact that we are providing more financing for an offshore project confirms the success of our long-term promotional programme and the promotional targets for the environment and climate protection".

As well as KfW, KfW IPEX-Bank is also providing finance: The KfW subsidiary, which is responsible for the project and export finance business sector within the Group, is also providing commercial credit of around EUR 300 million, together with four other international commercial banks. In addition, it is a facility and security agent and acts as a technical bank. In total, the borrowed funds for TWB II amount to around EUR 600 million. The overall investment costs for the 200-megawatt wind farm are around EUR 800 million.

The municipal wind farm TWB II is located just 45 kilometres away from the island of Borkum in the German part of the North Sea and is the second construction stage of the Trianel Windpark Borkum which was commissioned in 2015. 32 systems with 6.33-megawatt turbines manufactured by German company Senvion will be erected in water depths of 27-33 metres. With a total installed output of around 200 MW, the wind farm in the North Sea is intended to produce clean power for around 210,000 households after commissioning at the end of 2019.

The equity shareholders include 17 German municipal utilities as well as the Trianel municipal utility cooperation, with a total share of 38 . Further sponsors are EWE AG (37.5%) and a joint venture from the Municipal Electric Utility company in Zurich and the Swiss company Fontavis (24.5%).
