How can we stop plastic waste from polluting the oceans?

Since 1 January 2021, the production and sale of disposable cutlery, cotton buds, plastic straws and other disposable plastic products have been banned in the EU. This is the EU’s response to increasing plastic pollution of the oceans, a consequence of our “take-make-waste” economy. But what impact do these measures have? Are they an adequate response to the problem?
This issue of Development in Brief shines a light on the current state of research into marine pollution, presents various scenarios for the future and highlights some ways to stem the “flood of plastic”.
