In the context of refugees and crises, cash-for-work (CfW) programmes have been used in development cooperation for years. They are intended to secure the livelihoods of the acutely affected target groups in the short term. The current issue of "Development in Brief" takes a critical look at CfW projects and explains which aspects should be taken into account in their design and implementation in order to bring about stabilising and sustainable structure-building effects even in fragile contexts.
