South Africa – major challenges in the education sector
South Africa is still scoring points with its very well developed transport and telecommunications infrastructure. It also provides a stable financial system and legal framework. The country is investing more in education than the average of emerging market economies. However, the additional expenditure is insufficient to adequately prepare the vast majority of school leavers for the labour market. These deficits are preventing the country from harnessing the potential of a young population. The persistent growth weakness since the financial and economic crisis of 2007-2010 is also related to the problems of the education sector.
