New capital for Greek banks
The negotiations between Greece and the European partners have entered (another) critical stage. The recapitalisation of the Greek banks is high on the agenda and there is tremendous pressure to finalise it before the end of the year. Last weekend, the ECB published the results of the review of the financial institutions, which show that the four largest banks need up to EUR 14.4 billion of fresh capital. Stabilising the banking sector is important not only for the recovery of the Greek economy but also for the conclusions that can be drawn regarding the further institutional development of the euro area.
