Municipalities, prepare for old age!

The number of very old people in Germany will increase continuously over the coming decades. If these people are to participate in public life without restrictions wherever possible, the municipal and social infrastructure will need to be reconstructed so that it is suitable for the elderly and disabled. Currently there is an investment shortfall in barrier-free infrastructure. The German Institute of Urban Affairs estimates that the investment requirement by 2030 will be EUR 53 billion. The greatest investment need is in the barrier-free reconstruction of municipal housing stock, local public transport, road infrastructure and the residential environment.
