Alternative welfare is measureable

A multi-dimensional indicator measuring social prosperity and progress, such as was discussed in the Commission of Enquiry on Prosperity, Growth and Quality of Life of the German Bundestag, deserves broad support. The particular challenge here is to represent the quality of our production structures and patterns of consumption, which is per se complex in nature, within a single, simple measure, or a very small number thereof. The sustainability indicator calculated by the KfW Bankengruppe provides quantitative information on the progress of sustainable development within Germany. It looks at three dimensions of sustainability - the economy, the environment, and social cohesion - and, at least in part, embodies the wishes of the Commission.
