Playing and learning in a refugee camp

Most of the 80,000 inhabitants of the Zaatari refugee camp are children, 80 babys are born there each week. Alongside with 29 schools, there are 13 Makani centres, in which children and teenagers can spend the afternoon. The Arab word "Makani” means "my room”. The children, who are often traumatised by war and flight, can exercise activities such as playing, dancing and drawing, and they also get psychological support. The centres are managed by UNICEF, there are also specialists from Syria working there. KfW who is financing the power and water supply of the Zaatari camp on behalf of the German Federal Government also supports the Makanis.
