KfW Board of Supervisory Directors appoints Mr Stefan Wintels as Chief Executive Officer of KfW Group as of 1 October 2021

The KfW Board of Supervisory Directors has appointed Mr Stefan Wintels (54) as Chief Executive Officer of KfW Group for four years, effective 1 October 2021. The announcement was made by the Chair of the KfW Board of Supervisory Directors, Mr Olaf Scholz, Federal Minister of Finance, and the Deputy Chair, Mr Peter Altmaier, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, following the meeting of the KfW Board of Supervisory Directors on 23 June 2021.

After holding various management positions at Deutsche Bank and Citigroup in Frankfurt and London, Stefan Wintels was head of German operations at Citigroup Global Markets Europa AG from 2014 to 2020. In this position, he played a key role in deciding that the Citigroup EU broker/dealer is now based in Frankfurt. As Chief Executive Officer, he was responsible, among others, for corporate and investment banking, the European branch network and the internal departments of HR, Internal Auditing and Communications. Since 2020, Stefan Wintels has been Global Co-Head of Financial Institutions Banking, which includes FINTECHs in addition to banks and insurance companies. In this role, he is also a member of the Global Executive Committee in the department of Banking, Capital Markets & Advisory. Due to his many years of experience, he is very familiar with the international banking business and international financial markets. Stefan Wintels also possesses considerable committee and management experience.

Wintels holds a degree in Business Administration from the Technical University of Berlin and completed the second year of an MBA programme at the University of Illinois in the USA.

Stefan Wintels succeeds Dr Günther Bräunig (65), who will retire on 31 October 2021. In order to ensure a smooth transition, the Board of Supervisory Directors has extended Dr Bräunig’s contract, which originally ended on 30 June 2021, until the end of October 2021. In this respect, Dr Günther Bräunig and Stefan Wintels will act as Co-CEOs of KfW Group in October 2021.
