Portfolio award 2016 for KfW's investments in climate and environmental protection projects via its green bond portfolio
KfW has been awarded as “Best Responsible Investor 2016” by the renowned journal „portfolio institutionell“ for a second time since 2011. On the occasion of the 10th awards ceremony of the journal, KfW was awarded for its investment approach via green bonds under its green bond promotional portfolio. As it is said in the laudatory speech, KfW’s investment strategy „has convinced the jury with its transparency and rigour in the field of sustainable investment. KfW contributes to the further development of sustainable investment by investing in “green bonds” and promoting this subject in public.”
Since April 2015 KfW has been investing in so-called green bonds, i.e. bonds whose proceeds are exclusively applied to environmental and climate protection measures. KfW will build up a green bond portfolio of up to a volume of EUR 1 billion in the coming 2 to 3 years. Setting up a green bond promotional portfolio fits with the overall corporate mission of KfW with a special focus on financing environmental and climate-friendly projects. At the same time it emphasizes KfW’s role as sustainable investor.
"We are very pleased about the recognition of our strategic contribution to the financing of environmental and climate protection measures with capital market instruments, which complement our loan business and green bond issuance. This award sends a strong signal for an increasing commitment to the field of sustainable investment and helps to engage with other capital market participants for a common responsibility regarding climate change“, says Dr Günther Bräunig, member of the Executive Board of KfW in charge of capital markets. “Furthermore, we appreciate that the “Award for Industry Achievement” 2016 goes to the Managing Director of the sustainability initiative “Principles for Responsible Investment” of the United Nations (UN PRI), Mrs Fiona Reynolds”, Dr Bräunig adds. "Since 2006 KfW has been a signatory to the PRI and welcomes the fact that sustainability issues are becoming increasingly recognized in the German investment community."
