Ten years of the KfW's "Energy-efficient Construction and Refurbishment" programmes
- Funding provided for over four million housing units
- KfW Efficiency House established as standard
- Record amount committed to "Energy-efficient Construction and Rrefurbishment" in 2016
- Ongoing improvements to promotional funding and application process
KfW has been supporting energy saving in residential buildings for the past ten years: over 4 million housing units have either been built or refurbished to make them more energy-efficient during this period. KfW has issued close to EUR 100 billion in loans or grants to builders and renovators as part of the "Energy-efficient Construction and Refurbishment" programmes.
Overall, KfW's promotional funding has triggered investments of over EUR 260 billion in building measures and secured an average of 320,000 jobs per year in the building industry and regional trades. The energy-efficiency measures supported by the programmes are helping to reduce carbon emissions by almost 9 million tonnes per year. In total, more than EUR 15 billion of federal funds has been provided to the programmes. The German Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) currently issues over EUR 2 billion a year for the programmes, which form part of the campaign "Efficiency first". Every second newly built home in Germany is currently supported by funds from the "Energy-efficient Construction" programme and close to 290,000 homes received an energy-efficient makeover with the help of KfW in 2016.
KfW's "Energy-efficient Construction and Refurbishment" programmes together with the introduction of the KfW Efficiency House standard have created a brand that is now widely recognised by property owners. The ongoing growth of promotional figures is encouraging: last year alone, commitments reached a record level of EUR 15.5 billion, which is 46 % more than the previous year.

Over the years, KfW has been improving its promotional products on an ongoing basis and will continue to do so in future in order to support the German Federal Government and its energy and climate policy as well as making it easier for citizens to access attractive products," says Dr Ingrid Hengster, Member of the Executive Board of KfW Group.
In addition to continuously improving its promotional products, KfW has also created a digital application process to make it more customer-friendly: for the past two years, the "Bankdurchleitung Online 2.0 (BDO)" platform has been providing customers with direct confirmation regarding the eligibility of their application from their financing partners in just a few minutes. What's more, owners of single- and double-occupancy homes have been able to apply for all promotional grants online within a few moments using KfW’s grant portal since November 2016.
